Road trips over the entire circumference of a Jawbreaker

When I was a little girl and my family took road trips, usually out to Nebraska to visit my grandparents, all of us kids would sit in the back of our gold ten seater GMC and goof off, yelling at each other and sucking on monstrous jawbreakers from the Cracker Barrel until our tongues bled and we started leaving red, coppery tasting trails on our candy.

My dad would often drive through the night. We kids would pile on top of each other two to three high and  fall asleep to the sound of the pavement and each others sugar scented breath. Every so often I would wake up during those night drives to the silhouette of my parents interwoven fingers resting on the center partition and the sounds of emphatic late night AM voices quietly yelling over the airwaves.

I got to relive that memory a little bit on the drive home from Seattle on Sunday. I was laying in the back of "CD Player", our teal '93 colt vista, sleeping and I woke up to the sweetly mismatched harmonies of my husband and my older brother singing along to "Lean on Me". I half expected them to grab each others hands...
